![]() Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act (Stafford Act), as well as the implementation and enforcement of disability rights laws. SUMMARY: This report examines federal health care, housing, education, and emergency management programs before, during, and after the President declares a major disaster under the Robert T. The report offers findings and recommendations to bring about critical policy and systems change intended to advance national disability policy goals and reduce casualties. In this report, NCD examines the extent of compliance with federal laws and examines applicable federal programs and policies and their implementation in health care, housing, education, and emergency management. Despite this, the needs of people with disabilities are being overlooked in disaster management policy and planning. During an emergency or major disaster people with physical, sensory, mental, or cognitive disabilities are disproportionately impacted. In 2022 alone, the United States experienced 18 separate billion-dollar weather disasters, including drought, flooding, severe storm events, tropical cyclone events, wildfire and winter storm events. Immediate impacts of floods include property damage, destruction of crops and livestock, clean up costs and emergency response.SCOPE AND PURPOSE: Extreme weather events are increasing in frequency, severity, and cost. In fact, if emissions continue unabated, floods could cost the Australian economy $40 billion per year by 2060. Economic Impactsįloods made up the greatest proportion of economic damages from extreme weather in Australia over the last decade, followed by tropical cyclones and droughts. Extreme weather events such as intense rainfall and floods can reduce water quality and availability, jeopardising water security and affecting human health. For example, floods frequently damage power transmission and sometimes power generation, which also has knock-on effects like leaving people without access to refrigeration or the Internet. While intermediate levels of rainfall can cause damage to property, heavy rainfall can claim lives, as we’ve heartbreakingly seen already in the 2022 floods.įloods can also impact critical infrastructure which can have ongoing effects on health and well-being. Heavy rainfall and floods all affect our health in many ways – contaminating water supplies, increasing mosquito-borne diseases such as Dengue and Ross River virus, and increasing psychological stress in communities, as explained above. it’s happening now." #lismorefloods #NSWfloods /5OjwXWs9AT- Climate Council FebruHealth Impacts Our hearts go out to everyone currently affected. The compounding effect of these disasters is taking a heavy toll. Increasingly, we see that communities are being hit with one disaster after another, such as drought followed by fires followed by floods. Impacts of extreme rainfall and floods On communities
